REAL - Hawaii’s Youth Movement Exposing the Lies of the Tobacco Industry

REAL empowers youth across the state to fight against the manipulation of the tobacco industry. REAL has more than 3,600 youth members across the state of Hawaii and is growing everyday. Each teen is provided with gear and is trained to be advocates against the manipulation of the tobacco industry tactics.

Tobacco companies have been known to do some crazy stuff. Their main target are us teens. They have been targeting youth to replace the smokers that are dying off and have been covering it up. Tobacco companies don’t care. All they want is money. They know that nicotine is addictive and know that their advertising works so they keep making their deadly product.

Tobacco companies spend billions of dollars each year on advertisement alone. Using promotions such as buy one get one free schemes and selling the cigarette packs with mp3 players and cute designs. They also try to sell their product to youth by using things we like such as art, hip hop culture, and self expression.

Tobacco companies say that they’ve changed by giving major contributions to elected officials and political parties (to favor them in laws that are passing related to tobacco), giving money to charitable and educational organizations, supporting art and sport events, and event host fundraisers.

REAL believes in a smoke free Hawaii and have helped in passing Hawaii’s Smoke free law.  REAL helped pass the smoke free law because we wanted to make smoking a thing of the past starting with our generation.
