If you decide not to drink, that’s perfectly cool. Lots of people don’t like the taste of alcohol and others don’t like the way they act with alcohol. Some don’t drink because of religious, health or other personal reasons. Another is because people don’t want to risk getting addicted, especially if their family has a history of alcohol problems.
Lots of people drink because they think everybody does it. Sometimes it’s hard to say “No thanks, I don’t drink” because people might laugh and shut you down. So here’s what happening: people drink to fit in, and then they want you to drink so you can fit in with them. The reality is this: everyone doesn’t drink. Be strong! If you don’t want to drink, it’s not a problem!
If you choose not to drink, don’t let anyone put you down. You’re just being yourself. Just be clear on why you don’t want to drink, any reason you have is good enough. “I don’t like it,” “I have a game tomorrow,” “My parents will know.” Be cool and respect your decision, and other people will too.
Here are some suggestions from DARE (remember DARE?!) for taking a pass on drinking:
· No thanks J
· Change the subject
· Give a reason or excuse
Also, everyone needs a designated driver, don’t be afraid to volunteer!
Don’t forget, you can check in on how you’re feeling when you’re drawn to a group or activity. Is it the fun and friendship, or just a time to get drunk? Like hanging with friends or being at a party- that’s what makes you feel good, not the drink in your hand.
No one needs alcohol to have fun. You don’t need to lecture anyone about not drinking, all you have to do is say no if you don’t want any. Not drinking is a personal choice, and don’t be afraid to stick to it!
